How do we learn to spell?
Using ASL Fingerspelling is a great way to teach spelling. This technique uses visual, audio, spoken, and gestural cues to help students make multiple connections between the brain and the spelling words. Follow these steps to help your students learn to spell.
1. Show the word in print.
2. Say and sign the word.
3. Say and fingerspell the letters.
4. Say and sign the word.
5. Repeat so that each word is spoken, signed, and spelled three times.
After fingerspelling each of this week's spelling words three times, review the words for the year by following steps one through four, one time for each word.
