ASL Fingerspelling as a Tool to Teach Spelling

Remember copying spelling words five times each?  Copying by rote doesn't necessarily engage the brain, and it doesn't necessarily teach.

Keep your students engaged in spelling class by engaging multiple parts of the brain.   Use American Sign Language Fingerspelling to help your students:


*SEE the letters and the words - on cards, on the board, on a computer projection

*HEAR the letters and the words - spoken by the teacher and by classmates

*SAY the letters and the words - as they join in

*MOVE the letters and the words - use consistent movements and gestures by using American Sign Language Fingerspelling
